Sometimes I will have Australian Shepherds who are either older pup who were not selected at 8 weeks, or I will have retirees that have been spayed/neutered, or on the schedule to get spay or neutered. The younger ones are typically not selected because of color, which is extremely unfortunate because they are still the same great dog, with the same genetics and pedigree. Some of my best dogs have been ones left behind, I get it, you want what you want, especially if you are paying for it, but that is a decision by a potential buyer and not the fault of the puppy, so just because they are still available, doesn't mean something is "wrong" with them. The older ones, that can leave me, who would flourish being an only dog, are placed with an understanding it is a forever home for them to retire in, they still will have a tremendous amount of life in them, they will not be "used up" because I do not operate like that, and everything will be completely discussed about their temperament and if they would be a great fit. The comment I get all the time is "How can you part with them, isn't that hard on them since they have been with you all this time" and to put it simply it's like this, I have some Aussies who would not do well outside of this environment, those dogs are spayed and stay here with me till the day they pass, but the ones I think would excel and be so much happier being the main focus, the only dog or at least part of a smaller pack and to have their own family, I have no problem letting go so they can have that happy life, they have earned it and that is my main focus, is having happy animals. It takes a week or two for them to settle in, new sights, sounds and smells, and sometimes it is as if they had been there all along. There is not a fee for the older retirees per say, most everyone makes a donation amount of their choice, to benefit current or future litters, whether it be for toys, treats etc, this process has worked out tremendously and gives me that ole handshake feel of how honest and willing clients are to not only show faith in an older dog, but its fun for the puppies getting surprises.
